The LFP 5C designation indicates two things:

  • LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) is a battery chemistry renowned for its safety, thermal stability, durability (high cycle life), and tolerance to high temperatures, even if its energy density is slightly lower than other chemistries (such as NMC).
  • 5C means the battery can be charged at a current equivalent to 5 times its rated capacity. Concretely, the New G6's 80.8 kWh battery could accept a charge at 451 kW (if the architecture and charger allow it). This enables high charging speeds while preserving durability through optimised thermal management.

This combination (LFP + 5C) enables fast, stable, and secure charging, with a relatively constant power curve up to around 80% state of charge — unlike some batteries with less robust chemistry where power drops sharply after 60%.

In new-generation high-power charging stations (around 600V/800V or adaptable), a compatible vehicle can achieve a 10% to 80% charge in 12 minutes. This speed depends on the charger's output power and the vehicle's management system.

Even on a slightly less powerful charger (e.g. a conventional fast charger), an XPENG vehicle can charge to 80% in 12 minutes.

Ultra-fast charging relies on two key elements:
