Whether it's a long trip, a working stint or a second car that sits idle, every EV owner eventually faces the same question. What happens to the battery if the car isn't driven for a while? Left to its own devices, a stored EV can lose charge, stress its 12V battery and even damage the main pack. The fix is a small amount of planning before you walk away, plus a monthly top-up while you're gone. The good news: proper storage is simple, and most of it comes down to charge level.
When a battery sits for a long period, it slowly self-discharges. Understanding EV long-term storage starts with that simple fact. If it's left deeply discharged, real damage can occur. Cells can be pushed into a state they struggle to recover from. The same logic applies to the smaller 12V battery, which powers the car's systems while it sleeps. Both need the same kind of attention before a long break, and both are easy to protect with the checklist below. Planning avoids both problems, and neither step takes more than a few minutes.
The single most important step is the state of charge when you leave the car. Electric car storage tips almost always start with this:
Charge to between 30 and 60 per cent before storage. This is the sweet spot. That keeps the battery healthy without the stress of sitting at full charge for weeks.
Never store the car at a very low charge. A battery left nearly flat for weeks is at the highest risk of damage. Don't wait for the warning light to think about it.
If the battery is low, charge it first — even a short top-up makes storage far safer.
