XPENG — one of Australia's leading Chinese EV brands — has reached a new milestone in Physical AI safety. Its AI safety processes have passed ISO 8800 certification by UL Solutions — one of the very few vehicle manufacturers in China to earn this recognition.

In May last year, XPENG secured two core certifications in functional safety (ISO 26262) and safety of the intended functionality (ISO 21448). With this new AI safety (ISO 8800) certification, XPENG has now completed the full chain — from traditional functional safety to AI safety.

This marks a major step forward in XPENG's overall strength in Physical AI and safety, bringing its product safety system to an internationally leading level and laying a solid foundation for the ultimate safety and compliance of production vehicles.

About the AI Safety (ISO 8800) Certification

In the AI era, the safety of intelligent vehicles goes far beyond traditional crash protection. In addition to passive safety capabilities (such as cage bodies and airbags), battery electric cars now need more powerful safety systems — spanning active safety (such as AEB and AES) and beyond.

The safety challenges facing intelligent vehicles have also escalated: new risks such as the uncertainty of AI models and the complexity of data governance are emerging, going beyond what functional safety (ISO 26262)¹ and safety of the intended functionality (ISO 21448)² can cover.

The AI safety (ISO 8800) certification was created in this context. It is the world's first dedicated safety standard for AI systems in road vehicles. It covers full-lifecycle AI safety management — from design and data governance to model training, testing and mass-production operations across all electric car models.

Following a comprehensive audit by UL Solutions, XPENG's AI safety processes fully meet the requirements of the ISO 8800 international standard, demonstrating excellent safety governance capability.

International Certification, Global Momentum

XPENG's ISO 8800 AI safety certification is a technical breakthrough for the company — and an important sign that China's intelligent-driving safety standards are gaining global recognition — the same standards protecting electric cars in Australia. As one of the first enterprises in China to receive this certification, XPENG is demonstrating with action that Chinese intelligent driving technology meets world-class safety standards.

As global competition in intelligent driving technology intensifies, safety compliance has become a key component of corporate competitiveness. XPENG has always placed safety first in technology development, establishing rigorous safety management systems and processes to ensure every technological innovation is built on a foundation of safety.

Looking ahead, XPENG will continue to place safety at its core, continuously improving the safety and compliance of its intelligent assisted driving technology, bringing it to users around the world — including electric vehicle owners in Australia — for a smarter, safer and more convenient mobility experience.

Note:

¹ Functional safety (ISO 26262) ASIL D process certification: the globally recognised core standard for automotive functional safety, ensuring the safety of electrical and electronic systems across the full lifecycle through systematic management of design, development, production and operation, significantly reducing safety risks.

² Safety of the intended functionality (ISO 21448) SOTIF process certification: focused on addressing safety issues that arise during normal operation due to design limitations or environmental factors, such as sensor misjudgments and scenario-response failures.
